Careers Evening 2016

15 June 2016

On Thursday 2 June, over 100 Victorian postgraduate students and early postdoctoral researchers spent an evening at the Woodward Centre in Carlton listening to stories of interesting and varied career journeys.

Senior Lecturer at the Univeristy of Melbourne, Hayley Newton, spoke of the importance of global networks made while undertaking postdoctoral work.

Joseph Bianco outlined his ascent from working in sales for GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) to now being the Clinical Program Lead at GSK Australia, which has been rapidly expanding into the Asia-Pacific region. Jennifer Herz had also worked in pharmacuetical sales which lead her now to establishing her own product commercialisation consultancy company, Biointelect.

Priscilla Johanesen spoke of her return from overseas postdoctoral positions to Monash University to take up a senior teaching role, and of her love of teaching. Elizabeth Finkel spoke in turn of her love for writing, and her pathway from research scientist to scientific writer and now Editor-in-Chief of Cosmos Magazine.

The VIIN is greatful to each speaker for making themselves available after the presentations to chat with attendees who had plenty of questions!
